AIontheFly™: a vision inspection camera for under $200

A self-contained AI camera built from a Raspberry Pi and a 12 megapixel sensor, trained in about ten minutes and wired straight into the production line.

This work was led by GSWE's founder as senior AI engineer at an automotive electronics manufacturer. Client details are confidential.

The problem

Commercial vision systems cost thousands per station and take weeks to set up, so many useful checks never got automated.

What we built

  • A camera unit made from a Raspberry Pi, a 12 megapixel sensor, Power over Ethernet and a 3D-printed housing, for under $200 in parts
  • A three-step workflow: capture images and train a model in about ten minutes, download it, and deploy it to the camera
  • Connections to the existing line: PLCs, the manufacturing execution system, barcode and RFID readers, presence sensors and industrial I/O
  • Automatic image and result uploads to the cloud, so every decision can be reviewed and used to improve the model

The result

Checks that were never worth a full vision system, such as capacitor presence and loose screws, could be automated for the price of a few hours of manual inspection.
